Two Medicine or Many Glacier, GNP?

On our way to Canada, we've got a few days budgeted for the east side of Glacier. (We'll hit the west side on the return trip. By then, Going to the Sun Road should be open.) Any preferences between Two Medicine and Many Glacier? We'll be there in mid June, so I'm guessing a lot of the hiking trails will still be snow covered.

  • I'm partial to Many Glacier if I could only visit one of the two. Surrounded by the heart of Glacier, its well worth the visit and plenty of hiking as well as just going over and hanging out in the lodge. Campground has access to showers and laundry at Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, adjacent.

Was there the last week in June in 2009, and a few of the trails still had snow banks across them. No big deal if you have hiking boots on.

Which either one you pick, an overnight at Waterton and a visit to Prince of Wales hotel is worth the side trip.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe the best plan is to aim for Two Medicine and if it doesn't work, head to Many Glacier.
  • Stay at Many Glacier, it's really one of the highlights of GNP.
  • Very tough call -- the campground at Two Med is more open, with more views of the mountains -- great sunrises and sunsets over the lake, right from the campground:

On the other hand, there is more variety to the hiking at Many Glacier -- the trails take you high up the sides of the valleys, looking down on the turquoise lakes:

On the third hand, there is Dawson Pass (a long hike out of Two Med), where you feel like you are on top of the world (and the wind howls all the time -- very exciting):

When can I go back there???
  • Hi - we have stayed at both CG's. Sites at Two Medicine were smaller, IIRC - a couple could handle a TT... Nice lake there, really only 1 hiking trail from that CG (several trailheads in the area...). Many Glacier had a more "civilized" feel, as there is a general store right on site. More hiking options there, and yes, you can see mountain goats there. Also saw several moose on hikes there. I'd be glad to go back to either of them! ST
  • I think the mountains look more up-close and personal at Many Glacier. Plenty of tame critters wandering through the CG. A nice waterfall nearby as well as a beautiful lake, both in easy walking or biking distance. I didn't actually stay in Two Medicine, just stopped in for a picnic lunch on my way to Many Glacier CG, where I got really lucky... they were not yet full at 4:15 pm on a July afternoon.
  • We camped at Many Glacier the first few days of June 2010. We had rain showers when we were there so only the hiked to Red Rock Lake, which started right at the campground. No issues with snow. GTTS road wasn't yet open, but we did drive the RV as far in as allowed - to Rising Sun, then hiked a trail along St. Mary Lake to Sunrift Gorge.

At Many Glacier we saw many Mountain Goats and Bighorn sheep grazing on the mountain sides.

    No experience with Two Medicine.
