Will they let you pick a site? The last time we stayed, we picked the type of site (we had FHU) and when we got to the Lodge to check in, they assigned us a site. We didn't get to choose one. Then again, it was pretty full and that might of been the only site available.
My experience with GA State Parks consists of 1 visit and some moderate online research ;) In that, I've found that they don't assign sites. However, in your case, it may have different because they were reaching capacity or because you had one of the few FHU sites.
On one hand, I like the idea that the early bird gets the worm. But on the other hand, it makes me a bit anxious.
