Vet in Chama, New Mexico

I will be arriving in Chama, New Mexico, in a few days, and want to ride the Cumbres & Toltec railroad, but will need to find a place to leave my dog. I have heard there is a vet in town that also houses dogs for the day. Does anyone know where to find him? Thx.
  • Chama. What a great place!
We've stayed in the campground on the north edge of town (right next to the railroad tracks) and about 1/2 mile from the train station. The campground is a bit compact but for NM is heavily treed and shaded with large deciduous trees (cottonwoods I believe). Our dogs were fine in early summer (sans AC) if only for a day trip (if not big barkers). Wonder if the camp hosts may dog sit??

Years ago there used to be a terrific little Tex-Mex restaurant in Chama though sadly, no longer.
  • Sounds like "Vera's Kitchen." We stopped there first in the little white frame house and got acquainted with Vera. Then several times out on the highway at the new building. Same good food, but lost a lot of the "charm" of the old place. Got to visit with Vera many times. Sorry to hear it's gone (if I'm right about the one you mean.)

We did not have a dog, and most of the time were not staying in an RV park--in fact I think we were usually in an automobile. So, we can't help about the vet. We did use a kennel in Durango when we rode the Durango/Silverton train.
  • We will be staying at the Sky Mountain RV Park. We have a small Bichon Friese who sometimes tends to bark after a while if left alone. We don't want him to bother anyone, but we might leave him alone if there are no others camped nearby and can keep him cool. Thx.
  • It may be very well have been Vera's...a great hole in the wall. Nice memories, my Wife and I met my folks in Chama, rode the railroad and had these smoking hot 'n spicy burritos every night that we stayed in Chama.

Have you ever used Benadryl w/ your pups? For medical reasons (orthopedic) we needed to settle some dogs down and long ago Benadryl helped (dosage can be found on the net. but after finding the correct dosage I'd try it at home to make sure the dosage is correct and that there are no adverse or paradoxic reactions). The camp hosts may be persuaded (a gift card or some other offering) to take your pup out to water the grounds once...it is a long day on the train.

Have fun...unlike Cali (where I grew up) they've been receiving a lot of precip there too (we've had over 6" in May so far, setting a 123 year record)!
can check www.cocorahs.org to view precip and totals/daily.
  • Ah Chama, one of my favorite railroad towns. Have you asked the Sky Mtn people? I noticed on their website they have a "enclosed small and large dog pet park". They also may know of someone who pet sits. Unfortunately, my friend there is a cat person.
  • I just received a response from the folks at Toltec & Cumbres railroad to my question about dogs, (only seeing eye dogs allowed on train) and was given the name of the vet across the street from the train station, as well as a young man who cares for dogs. I will just arrive early enough to drop off my dog and park my motorhome nearby, hopefully in the station parking lot. By the way, this is perfect weather for us, as I was hoping to avoid the heat. Thanks all.
  • Yes, the old Vet across the street from the depot, more or less, it is behind the bed and breakfast there. Not the most stylish accomodations but about the only game in town.

We left our 2 dogs there for the day last summer while riding the train and they didn't need any therapy afterwards. Myself I would chose this accomodation over leaving them unattended for the day. Just my opinion.

  • It has been quite a few years since we went to Chama - but we stayed at the Parlor Car B&B (pre RV days) at 311 Terrace Ave.

The owner was also a small animal vet who did board dogs and cats for a day for travelers who wanted to ride the train. Looks like they still do that.
