Washington State - Mt. Baker area

Next July we want to spend a couple days exploring the Mt. Baker Highway area (Route 542), mainly sightseeing and day hiking. We are having trouble locating a good campground in this general area or within commuting distance. We will be towing a 34-ft fifth wheel. Does anyone have any campground recommendations for this area, and/or any suggestions or advice for sightseeing, etc.? Thanks for your help.
  • If you decide to go on the south side, I recommend Howard Miller Steelhead Campground, a Skagit County Park. It's a lovely park and would be better than Silver Lake for accomodating a big rig like yours.Again, recommend reservations in July.
  • Forty three years in Whatcom county before FT. Silver Lake is you best bet for a rig that size. Could stay in Lynden and head up South Pass or 542 in toad. If you do the Baker Lake side you can stay in Concrete and explore Hwy 20.
  • We're from Whatcom County ourselves. I recommend Silver Lake County Park, in Maple Falls. It's where we stay when we want to explore and hike around Mt. Baker. You will need reservations in July. http://www.whatcomcounty.us/1937/Silver-Lake-Park.
I do not recommend the forest service campgrounds for anything bigger than a truck camper. Welcome and safe travels!
  • If you plan to stay in either of the forest service campgrounds (Douglas Fir or Silver Fir) on the Mt Baker Highway, be sure to make reservations. Both times I drove by (in June & July) they were filled.

Last time I was there I stayed at Silver Lake County Park in Maple Falls, WA, about 35 miles from the ski area. Some sites have water & electric for $30.00 per night. There are couple of commercial campgrounds in Sumas, WA & a KOA in Lynden a bit further away.

542 is mostly a road to the ski area. not much else. I don't believe the ski area allows camping in the parking lot. you might call and check. (they have a web page)

The Baker Lake side ( off H/W 20) has several camp sites and many trails off any number of roads in the area.
  • The forest service campground at Glacier isn't too bad. No hook ups. Mt Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest/ Douglas Fir campground.
You are right there isn't much up WA 542
