My favorites are (in no particular order)...
Lewis & Clark Caverns (Interesting easy walk through a cave system)
Bannack Ghost Town (The best preserved ghost town in the world)
Museum of the Rockies (In Bozeman-best T-rex and triceratops fossils and other exhibits)
Virginia City / Nevada City (Old west towns and Montana's second territorial capital - Bannack was first)
Phillipsburg (Fun small mining town with giant candy shop and rock shops)
Garnet Ghost Town (Interesting ghost town with rich mining history)

There is so much to see in Montana between YNP and GNP. Do your research and find some places that sound interesting to you. Enjoy your trip!

There is a truck stop at the I-90 and 287 junction. Easy in and out; large parking lot for maneuvering. Also a station at the Wheat Montana Deli. Not quite as roomy but still an easy in and out.

Just checked and there's diesel fuel in Ennis on 287 - .01 cheaper today than at Belgrade :) Check on GasBuddy.com

At Ennis is Virginia City Ghost Town - nicely renovated and staffed activities in summer. A fun place. Check out the web site. You can continue on 287 west of there to 41 to I-90 - an easy drive with a RV.

thank you for great suggestions! plan A is to go 287 BUT because we will have gotten gas in Rawlins on way to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone, and doesnt seem to be another place for gas between thos areas, via 287 til Butte, we thought, depending on gas mileage (we do have 100 gal tank) we have plan B going up 191 to get gas in Belgrade,we will see....never been the route Im relying on google map and my FMCA map that tells me diesel gas stops for our motorhome.

Stop at Wheat Montana just west of Three Forks at I-90 and Hwy 287 for lunch. Grant - Kohrs Ranch NHS and Old Montana Prison at Deerlodge, the Mining Museum at Montana Tech in Butte, Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman are interesting stops. We prefer Hwy 287 through Ennis rather than Hwy 191 to get to I-90 from West Yellowstone.

In Montana you can visit Bannack an old ghost town, best we have found. It is now a state park and is in great shape. It is the site where the territorial convention was held and the old hotel they staid in is still there. Also in Montana is the National Bison Range.

You will be visiting one of the most beautiful areas of our nation. Have some good safe fun.
