Got a chuckle from your reply. I too would think that "out west" would mean coming all the way to the pacific. I guess they only want to make it to the "mid west".
I think you are correct. Most Californians think in terms of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco as "west", everything else is "east". Two weeks is not going to give the OP much time to let the vast west soak in and experience it. A couple days in the giant Redwoods and a few along the Pacific Coast Highway, perhaps the most scenic single road in America, and the travel time from the OP's home and back and two weeks are consumed.
