what to do about your mail when snowbirding

Hello All,

My husband and I will be snowbirding for the first time next winter. We are only going for Jan/Feb. What is my best option for getting our mail sent to us while gone? The post office said they could forward it to us. Then I did read somewhere that by doing that the mail gets lost a lot. I could also ask my neighbor to get the mail and just send us the important stuff. I would give her money for postage too. Most of our bills are paid online but some items can't be so I would like to have my mail sent to me. What does everybody do?

  • You have to be friends with a neighbor but what's worked best for us is to do a temp. address change to the neighbor, then we exchange calls every couple of weeks to discuss what looks important for them to open.
  • We just got home from 117 days of snowbirding. We forward our mail to my brother, and pick it up when we get home. Most of the mail was tax related. I can pay all our bills online, most of them pay automatically.
  • I file a change of address, then cancel the change before making the trip back. I don't think that any of the mail has ever gotten lost.
There are some "gotcha's" though. The USPS will forward one copy of a magazine subscription - but only one. You have to make the address change with the magazine publisher. And remember to make that same change before returning home.
Remember to cancel the change of address order before heading back home. AND put a mail hold on the home address until you get arrive home.
