On second thought, I am not sure if it is Virginia Peak -- I could not even find Virginia Peak on my topo, I am ashamed to say. Might be Dunderberg or Castle Peak? Or even Mt. Olsen?
Ah yes, I stand corrected. I recognize that mountain from my drives over Virginia Pass, and we've hiked near Virginia Lakes many times (sometimes the hike is commonly called "Virginia peaks" so I just assumed the peak was of the same name. BUT looking at my map I see there is no such thing! The peak should be one of the ones you mentioned. - profdant139Explorer IITerrible roads. 45 minutes of crawling over ruts, roots, rocks, washboard, and sand, plus some very steep hills. No damage to the trailer, but the fridge popped open and some stuff fell out. The locks on the cabinets held up ok. I have since installed an extra latch on the fridge.
If you want to boondock, there are lots of easier places in the Eastern Sierra (and Western, too). - bigcitypopoExplorer II

Nina, that might be Virginia Peak -- we were north and east of Virginia Lakes. And we might have been a day or two late for the the peak of color -- there was a snowstorm a few days before we arrived, and some frost and wind damage. But it was still pretty darn good:
Beautiful spot... That what we want to do... go places like that.... How were the roads getting to that spot..? - profdant139Explorer IIOn second thought, I am not sure if it is Virginia Peak -- I could not even find Virginia Peak on my topo, I am ashamed to say. I figured I would try to revive this thread -- anyway, here is our latest spot, northeast of Yosemite and southwest of Bridgeport, at 9000 feet -- the peak in the background is at 12,000 feet.
I am not sure how this shot will display on the forum -- I designed it to be a really wide shot, to convey the sense of isolation and silence. A very small trailer in a very big countryside:
WOW...what a gorgeous spot! Looks like you hit the fall colors just right too. That looks like Virginia Peak in the background if I'm not mistaken. - nina_70ExplorerFigured we'd join in again too. We just started our fall boondocking season in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is just south of Mammoth Lakes:

Bit chilly right now, so not sure how long we'll stay at this elevation (~7,000 feet), but the snow on the mountains is beautiful. - garyhauptExplorerI am off on a one month wander...spending many nights in driveways as I visit my way about.
However...I have been stopped in a few places...
this is Quesnel Forks, in BC. An old mining area that is 13k's in on a nasty one lane dirt/clay road. I had to use 4 wheel to get up the hill to get out due to the rain the day before. But sure a nice spot.

And my wake-up view from on lakeside overnight parking in Peachland.

Wow, great panoramic shot of my favorite part of CA - The Eastern Sierra!
A couple of weeks ago I was camping SW of Bridgeport at 7K ft and it got down to 19F at night. Way too cold for me. :) Fall colors were just barely starting.Off Pavement wrote:
We boondocked in the Kaibab National Forest up a very good gravel road 5 miles
About a month ago, I was in the same area, too. Someone gave me a tip about this great boondocking spot with a fantastic view to the E. Probably near where you where. That Kaibab Plateau is loaded with boondocking spots! :)
