Where to stay

We are being brave and taking our 6 kids from Washington State to Washington D.C. in May. I was curious on thoughts of where to stay in the D.C. area. If you also have any have to stop places along the way feel free to let me know. We are taking an upper middle router through Idaho, Utah, Nebraska Iowa etc.. Thanks!
  • We always prefer camping to RV parks so when in the DC/Baltimore area we use Patapsico State Park in a suburb of Baltimore.
  • We also stayed in Cherry Hill this past summer. They have a person that helps you plan your trip about what to see and how to get there.
  • We also stayed at Cherry Hill, which is a nice park. We discovered that we could get on the very nearby freeway and drive to the stop which was one stop PAST the one that is ordinarily used by those staying in the park. We boarded the train there and and of course rode back to that point. We discovered that in the morning the bus ride was pretty direct to the train, however, the bus ride back to the park in the afternoon took much longer and there were several stops. We were hot and tired in the afternoons, so that very short ride home from one exit away from the park exit was very attractive.
  • Cherry Hill Park is best for your first visit to the DC area. It's located in College Park MD. As others said, it has good access to the WMATA Metro. The Metro is pretty user friendly and will get you to all of the touristy stuff downtown. The CG staff is well versed in giving directions for getting downtown and what's going on in the area. The campground store is pretty well stocked and there is a grocery store right up the street.

    However, there are alternates. link
  • Must see VietNam memorial, the view from the steps (both directions) of the Lincoln memorial, Smithsonian Ins.
  • We also stayed at Cherry Hill Park. Very nice, clean, great pool, and kids will enjoy.

X2 Plus they have local transportation that comes right to the park. No need to drive once you get there
