Which of these 3 Ala state parks are the best

Thanks Jayco for info on the roads. Wind creek sounds like a nice place also we will have to check it out also. Thanks for all the replies.

AL-35, exit 218 is the best way up from I-59. The only real narrow part is right downtown Fort Payne. Once you start up the mountain the road is wide, and it is straight.

Been to all three parks mentioned plus Wind Creek. Wind Creek is by far best if you're into water sports. Lake Martin is hard to beat. A few sites are FHU but all have water and electricity.

DeSoto is newly updated with all good roads, paved sites with full hook ups. The climb up the mountain is quite steep. Lots of great hiking and water falls.

Oak Mountain is OK. Nice wooded campground on a small lake (no gasoline motor boats). Sites vary in size and services available and are past due for updating. Nice 18 hole golf course is in the park.

Cheaha is on the highest mountain in Alabama, thus a little cooler place. The sites are mostly not too level and badly need upgrading. Some nice views off the mountain but I can't remember any sites that offer a view. As a campground guest I believe you can access the hotel pool but not sure about this. Being on a mountain you can expect a steep climb getting there.

The only one we've been to is DeSoto, we like the park. But most of the sites are short on SHADE. So in the heat of summer we don't go there for that reason.

Thanks for all the replies everything sounds real good keep them coming especially if some one knows of a particular site at one of the parks is better or worse to get. We have a 27 foot trailer with a slide.

Hard to go wrong with Alabama State Parks.
We have only stayed at Oak Mountain but we liked it a lot. It offers golf, horseback riding and the wildlife rehab center is really interesting.

We like shade trees,hiking,and looking at scenery. A playground is a plus when I take the grand kids. Desoto sounds real nice with the waterfalls. I'm fine with electric and water full hookups are a bonus. I ask about the state parks because 95% of out camping is done in state parks or coe parks. We enjoy the natural beauty of these parks.

It all depends on what you're looking for in a campground experience. Hiking? Playgrounds? Potluck parties?

You'll get better appraisals of the different parks if you share what your preferences are in the camping experience.
