Whitefish point, MI parking

Thinking about stopping at Whitefish Point with trailer in tow. The aerial view shows plenty of parking. I am wondering how crowded it is on a Tuesday in late July. I am going to call and ask them but I wondered if anybody has any thoughts or experience.

  • We were there 3 Summers ago with a 35' fiver. Pulled completely through the lot (carefully; some parents seem to have more children than they can keep an eye on) and parked on the pavement just beyond the end of the marked spaces. A moderate walk back to the entrance, but easy pull out. Note that there was no place to get anything to eat until we got back to the main road. That may have changed.
  • I had no problem but as I was leaving two tour buses were pulling up. Luck of the draw. Good advice above to always plan your way out while you have the chance. I enjoyed Whitefish Pt a lot though it was a couple of Mays ago and I still saw ICE floes near the shore.
  • Thank you all for your replies. We are not planning on staying overnight at the point. It is a bit pricey but sounds very interesting. Good point Jay Pat about parking in the direction to leave.
  • Dave,

It is well worth the stop. I enjoyed most of it, but I lost friends with the Fitz so there were rooms I could not stand to go in. Fortunately, my wife is very understanding.

If you are self contained, and need a nearby overnight, there is a snowmobile parking area on 123 just west of Paradise that is not much used a lot of the year. Just a lot, but it is flat and quiet.

  • Get there early and turned around so when you are ready to leave, just leave.
I enjoyed the museum (a variety of cool stuff) and climbing the lighthouse.

  • Should not be an issue, the parking lot is pretty big and a through the week visit even in the summer, should not be crowded.

keep in mind that while you can peruse the area, the Whitefish Shipwreck Museum isn't free. It has a hefty admission fee.

I worked on the Edmund Fitzgerald as a fitter many. many years ago, back in my Longshoreman days.

One thing to also keep in mind is, the drive up to the museum is 2 lane and it's narrow and no place to pull off until you get to the point. It's all residential with many drives so pay attention.

Not sure, but I don't believe overnight parking is allowed in the museum parking area. Could be wrong about that, not sure. Lots of places (campgrounds) up that way though. Trout Lake is a nice one.

Have fun, lots of history up that way and Lake Superior is very COLD so don't go swimming unless you want to freeze.
