Around 1980 I lived in the foothills of NC (Near Morganton area). I was in my middle 20's and had already traveled (via motorcycle) almost every state East of the Mississippi. When I moved to NC, I was really surprised so many folks never ventured very far from home all their lives. After a while, I came to accept it, this is just part of the culture there and the way folks were. Of course, trying to relate to some of my neighbors and people I came to know was difficult too. I could talk, but they really couldn't understand, having never experienced anything farther than 50 miles or less all their lives. After living there for 2 years, I began to understand WHY they never had a desire to go anywhere else! They call that area "God's Country!" And YES! They are absolutely correct. If I ever get to retire, I'd love to go back to that area and spend the rest of my days too!
A Convert. Come on back. we'll head up the hill.
