Crater Lake is a very deep lake. I think it is in the 2000' deep range?
Lake Tahoe is also a deep lake, and I guess there is a lot 'more to do' around Lake Tahoe. Crater Lake is way out in the woods, far from any big towns.
There are a lot of things to see besides the lake. Lots of trees, and mountain communities, camping abounds, but it does in other places as well.
I am currently reading a book about Big Creek, at 4,000' elevation in California. 2,000 feet above is Huntington Lake, and 2,000 feet below is a equally large powerhouse, both making 300 MW of power and built back in 1912. It is interesting just because how difficult it was to build the project, back when there where no trucks that could drive into the mountains, and do a day's work there. Also wonderful campgrounds, huge trees, and fresh air of being at 4,000 - 6,000' elevation!
I guess if I really wanted to spend the summer someplace, it would be the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. You can camp for free in the forest outside the National Park.
Or perhaps another summer will be spent in Yellowstone NP.
Wonderful thing about America is we can travel all over without needing a passport, or changing one type of currency for another. We have gas stations within 50 miles of each other along all the interstate freeways, and the freeways are built with less than 6% grades! 13' wide lanes, that are not found in most other countries!
Have fun camping!
