FWIW, I've driven past Crater Lake many times wihout stopping, going north-south, or south-north, on the 97 or the 5. I've driven past on my way to or from Mt Hood, Mt Bachelor, Mt Shasta, Mt Adams, Mt St Helens (edited version), Mt Rainier and Mt Baker, along with peaks in the Olympics, Cascades, the Sierra, San Gabes and San Berdus. If I thought it was a "must see" I would have at least slowed down once.
I've seen Lakes Tahoe and Cour d'Alene, which so far have sufficed for the "big mountain lakes, deep and clear" category. I've also seen the Grand Canyon, which totally sweeps the "big hole in the ground" category. What void is left for Crater Lake to fill?
I'm glad the OP posed this odd question with no easy or sensible answer. I think everything on each of our bucket lists ought to be re-examined, and either revisited (physically), or scoffed at.
My opinion, as always.
