Speaking of forest management, Cal Fire runs two demonstration forests -- Mountain Home in the Sequoias, and Jackson State in Mendocino. Both are wonderful places -- there is plenty of old growth, and much mechanical thinning of new growth.
There is logging, but it is not clear cutting. The tires and tracks on the machines are designed for low ground pressure. The logging is carefully monitored -- just enough to thin the forest and make money for the loggers.
I don't know whether the Cal Fire techniques can be scaled up for use in the national forests. But if you are a fan of healthy forests (and we are), those two places are worth visiting.
