Winter Camping Close To New York?

Our camping season usually ends by Halloween because the local parks shut the water off at the campsites and close the bathrooms.

We are interested in trying a February trip when then kids are off for winter break. We do have the upgraded insulation and the heated, enclosed underbelly for the camper.

Any suggestions on places to go in February that would be at most about 6 hours from NYC? Is any park going to have running water where we could at least fill up the camper? If not, does any park at least have heated bathrooms/showers that remain open in the winter?

  • Winter Camping is available at Danforth Bay Camping Resort in Freedom, NH, with full hookups, great facilities, and plenty to do in the area. Other choices include Gunstock Mountain Ski Resort in Gilford, NH (another great choice) and Otter Lake Camp Resort in Marshalls Creek, PA. We love winter camping and have done so for many years.
  • Camp Chautauqua near Lakewood and Jamestown NY is open all year. It is a beautiful spot on a 25 mile long lake. They are open for RV's and winter activities. We just returned from there.
  • The Jonestown KOA in PA near the junction of I-78 & I-81 is open year round. They have running water at the sites and heated bathrooms/showers. It's only about a 3 hour drive, depending on which way you go from where in NYC.
