What part of Canada do you live in?

- badger6724ExplorerWife and I are still going down. I am still working and so is the wife so we can still afford it. But all I get in the sun is 6 weeks vacation. Not sure we will be able to go when the pension kicks in a couple of years if the dollar stays low.
- moishehExplorerBJ Bear: There was a time when they paid for US procedures. But that changed more than 10 years ago. If it is an emergency and you need to be medivaced they MIGHT pay for a procedure. If the DR. says you cannot be moved they will pay. I think we are all in for a big shock next season ( starting fall 2016). With the weak dollar and increasing US medical costs not only will the insurance be very expensive it will also be even more restrictive.
Moisheh - bjbearExplorerInteresting post...
First off, we will continue going south for as long as possible. Certainly a minor inconvenience like a $1.30 dollar isn't going to stop us! We just adapt. Spend less on extras, eat out less often and enjoy the very much cheaper beer and wine. Tough life, but someone has to do it. I'll crawl on my hands an knees and panhandle to support mysel before I would spend a winter here in Cold Lake, Alberta. It is bad enough in the summer without having to deal with the winter.
On the subject of insurance.... You are crazy to risk travelling in the US without insurance. I know from friends and aquaintances how fast the bills can climb even for what you might think is a minor problem. Also, I am not aware of any insurance (Canadian out of province) that will willingly pay for medical proceedures. It is all about stabilizing you and getting you back to Canada for primary care. The reason I know is that my wife broke her knee a couple years ago and had to come back for surgery. Lot's of our friends said their insurance would have paid to do it in the US, but when I investigated it, all the policies were the same as ours. The friends just hadn't had to use it yet and find out the hard way. There were a few cases I found where a low cost proceedure was paid for, but in each case it was because it was cheaper to do it in the US than it was to fly the person home. - LOFAT36ExplorerWe're going again for 5 months. You only go around once.
- Falcon35ExplorerWe are planing on going south in Jauary. Have not made up our minds as to where .We were thinking it was time to try FL again. With gas down and as well as the $ down we should go back to TX because of the lower park prices.
- Jack_Diane_FreeExplorerWith the Cdn dollar at .75UDD and by the time it goes through the banks/cards etc. that will be .70USD plus the crazy cost of health insurance we will not be going south this winter.
- almccExplorerI would think that the insurance companies would be taking on a lot of liability if they "dump" a patient they transported back into Canada without having a bed for the patient, their responsibility doesn't end at the Canadian border
We aren't quite the "sue me" culture as other places, but I note an increasing number of ads from some ambulance chasing lawyers here in Ontario, they would be salivating at the possibility of the massive payout resulting from a patient who was dumped back into Canada and developed complications (or death) and sued. - her_IExplorerWe are not actually looking forward to the two four letter words that we have avoided for the last several years.
