We like to have some options each day when traveling without reservations. Pick an RV park before Rock Springs, at Rock Springs, further north on 191 and around Palisades, ID. Then stop when you feel tired. Also, you never know when you'll have weather or maintenance issues while traveling so always have different options.

Pretty much nothing out there along I-80 between Rawlins & Rock Springs. And I mean nothing - make sure to have enough gas for 100 miles of travel before leaving Rawlins.

Looks like you're looking for someplace to stay for a night between I-80 and West Yellowstone. We have stayed in the Rock Springs KOA - it's nothing to look at, but has clean facilities and is fine for a night. The federal (NFS) CG below Palisades Dam looks decent - expect some road noise but the scenery is nice. We have not stayed there yet. There are some others in Palisades and Swan Valley that we are definitely considering in the future, though, for short campouts - as suggested, check out those locations on rvparkreviews.com. West Yellowstone has some wonderful CGs; our favorite is Grizzly, since we don't dry camp and need reservations; they should be open by then, but each campground's website should tell you when they open.

An alternate route from Rock Springs to West Yellowstone would be to take US 30 north from I-80 (west of Rock Springs) through Kemmerer WY and Montpelier & Soda Springs ID to I-15, then head north to US 20 in Idaho Falls - take that north to West Yellowstone. Some CGs along that route include the Lyman KOA (if open), Montpelier KOA, Pocatello KOA, and a few NFS CGs in Island Park ID. Some - especially the NFS ones - may not be open yet, but Rock Springs & Pocatello KOAs are open year-round. From anywhere along that route, it will be up to a day's drive to Madison CG. This route is somewhat less scenic than the one through Alpine, but is less likely to have problems with wintry weather over most of it. (Montpelier to Soda Springs may still have snow on occasion.)

Given the parking lot sizes for Mesa Falls, I'm not sure I'd recommend that stop while you've got your rig in tow.

There's a KOA just south of Jackson between it and Alpine Junction. Not sure of the campgrounds along the Snake River corridor. You can google the Forest Service district then find out on line if they'll be open.

If you decide to go up Hwy 26 through Swan Valley, there's some RV parks there and if you go up through Hwy 20, there are several RV parks along that corridor. Check out www.rvparkreviews.com. We've stayed at Red Rock and they are nice. Their site says they open May, 2016, but no specific date listed. Also check if the KOA's in West Yellowstone will be open; Grizzly RV in town, or better yet, Baker's Hole just 2 miles north of town - and worth it!

We stayed in West Yellowstone at Grizzley RV. Close to the West Entrance. Grizzley & Wolf Discovery Center in town close to rv park. Figure on approximately 70.00 a nite. Very nice park. We're going in June. Enjoy!!

As I gather from your other posts on this subject, you are coming from PA via I-80 and you have reservations at Madison campground in Yellowstone.

Since coming in from Grand Teton NP is not doable because the south entrance will still be closed, I would recommend taking 191 from I-80 at Rock Springs. There is a KOA at Rock Springs and also Sweetwater Fairgrounds 307-352-6789. We've stayed at many fairgrounds during our travels and they're good for a short stay. You only need a one night stay there. Then take 191 to Alpine, WY and get on 26 to Idaho Falls and north on 20 to West Yellowstone and get to Madison campground from that entrance which will be open. Madison is the first Yellowstone campground you'll come to.

So...if you stay in Rock Springs or even if you see a RV park before coming to Rock Springs, stay there, then drive to Hwy 26 in Idaho and you have two options for staying just beyond Alpine, WY at Palisades. It's a beautiful area and you'll enjoy the scenery. It's a very easy drive from Rock Springs. You could also do a day trip to Jackson and stock up on groceries and fuel. Whatever you do, don't take Hwy 22 out of Jackson to Victor with your RV. It's very steep. If you want to return to Palisades via 22 from a day trip in your vehicle to Jackson it would be fine and scenic. Here are the two parks:

From Palisades it's an easy drive to W. Yellowstone and Madison campground and again, very scenic. You'll pas by Upper and Lower Mesa Falls road around Ashton on ID20 if you want to check out them. You enter the half-loop off Hwy 20 - see the falls - and exit again on Hwy 20 - easy.

Yellowstone Valley Inn RV Park near Cody WY is where we stayed. We drove to the east entrance each day. No problem. We saw as much of Yellowstone as we wanted. Not a fancy park but served our purpose. Restaurant on site. Close enough to Cody to visit there too. Be sure to ask for 50 amp and full hookup when you make reservations.
