We stayed 3 nights at Fishing Bridge and used it as the base camp to explore Yellowstone. Yellowstone is BIG. Really BIG. No matter where you stay, you'll have to drive. A lot. You also need to factor in the jams. Usually bison or elk but still jams of traffic backed up a long way.
IMO, staying in the park is better than staying outside but if you don't have reservations, you might be out of luck.
