Your Ideal Place in Mid-South Florida?

For the first time in eight years, we are thinking of taking a vacation in February in mid to south Florida. I have been looking at resorts all day, so I thought I'd come and ask you guys ....

Where would you stay for a week, if money was no option?

We would love a place on or near the water, whether it be the beach or a lake!!

Thanks bunches! Jules

  • Red Coconut in Fort Myers Beach if you can get in there. Lots of the parks on the water are already booked up for the winter season. You could also try San Carlos RV park in the same area but the sites aren't large.
  • I like Fort Lauderdale on the east coast (that would be my beach place), St Pete on the other, though further south Fort Myers has its charms.

Money no object, and there for a vacation, I would pick the Ritz-Carlton on the Beach in Fort Lauderdale, although the Hilton on the beach is quite adequate at about 1/3 the price, just not so much in the middle of things.

As I am usually in Fort Lauderdale one or two nights before a cruise, I like being around the marina, and value for money is an object for me, I usually stay at one of the cruise port/convention center hotels on 17th street; Holiday Inn Express is always adequate if looking for a place to sleep, not pampering.

If you are asking about RV resorts, I can't help, as I don't take my RV to Florida because I have other places to stay. I know RV parks on a lake, or on a beach, are somewhat scarce, but near the West coast you will find them backing onto waterways.

One of my cousins winters (actually, lives more than half the year) at Upriver RV Resort near Fort Myers. It is a nice community of semi-permanent residents. I don't know what might be your chances of finding a space for the month of February, as that is the peak of the season for South Florida.

My own favorite camping place in Florida, that time of year, is Highlands Hammock State Park. But that's been tent camping, I've not looked at it as a RV resort.
  • Mike, that is one of the ones I looked at. It looks nice!

    Thanks for your input! :)
  • Last winter we spent a week at Riverside RV Resort in Arcadia, FL. Giving the address as Arcadia, while officially accurate, is misleading. It's about 4-5 miles east of I-75 (exit 170) which is actually closer to Port Charlotte.

The park has expanded the number of sites to about 500 so there are available sites. It has a great clubhouse with a LOT of activities. The weekly rate is in the mid-$300 range. The beaches weren't too far away. We really enjoyed our stay there.
