Stranded

Not sure after years of paying for an elite membership how we ended up stranded in Darien Georgia, in the six o’ click hour.  We had a blowout on I 95 north and Good Sam representatives were unable to provide us with the service clearly spelled out in their agreement, and which we have paid for, for years. First agent, Shay, we spoke to stated help was on the way within the hour.. Second agent, we spoke to told us no one could be found to assist. I asked to speak with a manager/administrator and was told the same in addition to being told part of it was due to the Labor Day holiday. We broke down on Tuesday. The holiday was over. Dazed, disappointed and confused.

  • The main issue I always had with RSAs is that they will only call companies in their network. I did have Coachnet years ago and they helped me once and they actually called a tow company out of their network. I don't think any of them do that anymore. I mean, what are you paying for? Armed with a cell phone and a credit card, you can find someone in your area likely easier than a company going through a list of network providers. Some RSA stories are great. Most aren't. I don't like to rely on anyone. I carry tools, and know how to search for anything I need on my phone. The last 2 times we've had an issue on the road I was able to manage it myself and get back on the road in a much shorter time than waiting for some RSA to use ABC company because it's in their network, when XYZ company is available but not on their list. Also, most local authorities now have State/County provided RSA that can at least offer some help and guidance. To me, an RSA is like an extended warranty; their list of what they can't help with is longer than what they will. It's a money maker. What have you gotten for all your years of premiums? Sounds like a false sense of security. You also may want to check your insurance company. Some offer a version of RSA and they don't care who is in their network. And something that a tow driver once told me, RSA companies don't pay claims quickly. It's a monthly thing and it requires a review. So if you have someone paying you immediately or an RSA who has had to review and hopefully pay within a month, which call are you taking?

Made a trip last year where at least 25% of the time, I had no cell service. Was on state and federal hi ways the entire time. My provider is one on the nations largest carriers. None of the RSA carriers are worth anything if they can't be contacted. Might make a case for having a starlink connection if you travel such areas. I had good luck with an RSA on that same trip.  our luck held out and we were able to get someone out on Labor Day to change a tire. However, I ended up doing it myself as the representative we attempted to communicate with had such broken English skills at best. After 45 min on the phone with him, I still wasn't sure if someone was coming or not. And again, my luck held up and we were able to get the rig far enough off the hiway to change the tire in relative safety. I signed the paperwork so the guy they sent out got paid. I was done by the time he got there.  I too believe that RSA's are of limited value. Mine covers all our vehicles and I keep it cuz I don't want my wife changing a tire on the edge of the freeway, even though she is certainly capable.  For that reason alone I will continue to pay for it.

      Safe travels
