Adding a 15/20A external connector

Has anyone added a connector similar to the marine-style 30A that comes on a trailer?
My Sunline had a built-in power cord that stowed under the sofa and was accessible by lifting the sofa seat. I stored an extension cord there to run out the mouse hole, along with the 30A cord, to supply power to my space heater.
My Rockwood has a separate power cord and no mouse hole to provide a way to route my extension cord into the trailer.
I don't want to: 1) Prop a storage door open and run the cord through a storage bay, allowing cold air and critters in or 2) Put a cord past a seal on the slide.
I suppose I could install a regular-sized mouse hole somewhere, but that seems like an awfully big hople to drill for one, small extension cord.
Any ideas?

  • Here's another style. It's 15 amp and made of metal. I used one on my cargo trailer 10 years ago and it's worked flawlessly with no leaks. The outlet cover is spring loaded. It secures nicely to the substrate and has a lot of back-surface for caulk (before installing). The only color I've come across is grey, but a rattle bomb would make it any color you like.

  • I picked up the Marinco plug yesterday. It is just what I need to keep DW from worrying about critters climbing the extension cord.

    Thanks all,

I added a second 30A service to my trailer which is completely independent of the OEM electrical system which feeds two dedicated 15A duplex outlets each protected by a 15A CB located in a new load center I installed in my rear pass thru compartment. This load center is feed by a short 30A cord that I ran up thru the floor in the rear pass thru and simply have it secured up to the floor of the trailer on the outside rear that I plug into a second 30A cord. Both his second 30A service and the original factory 30A cord are fed by a 50A to dual 30A dogbone that I custom made. Details of what I did, parts, costs and where I got the parts (all from Lowes/HD except for the new 30A plug used on the cord to the new load center) are in the captions to the pictures in that album ... CLICKY

This solved all my electrical issues except for in the summer I still can't run my A/C, microwave and WH on electric at the same time since those are all connected to the original factory 30A service so I can only run 2 or the 3 at once. In the winter that issue goes away since I only run the A/C on fan. This is really a non issue anyway since I can reach all the controls for all three of these from the same location in my trailer. I usually just turn the WH off electric when I use the microwave and this is only for like a couple of minutes at any one time ... we don't cook in the microwave and only use it to heat up things.

This system also eliminates any extra extension cords running inside the trailer.

In fact before I added my second service I had run two 15A extensions (one from the outside shower cubby to under the bathroom sink and another from the back bedroom out thru the rear pass thru and down thru the floor to the rear outside of the trailer) which are still there, but never used now so I actually have now 75/80 to almost 100A combined electrial service entrances limited only by the types and number of outlets available on the pedestal.

  • I added a 20 Amp plug. It feeds into my front storage and into a dual 20 amp breaker box. One breaker feeds a second air conditioner I added to the bedroom. The second feeds a dedicated receptacle in the living area to run a space heater in cool weather.
  • I added the 15 amp Marinco Connector above. It works great for a add on addition powerwise and there is no opening for critters and such, also it was easy to install.

I have heard of people installing one of these, and this may also be in my future for running a space heater.
    That is by Marinco.

That's what I need, only in black.

Come stop by Forest River Forums and I bet someone will help you out there with your Rockwood.

I stop by there every morning. RodeoGeorge helped solve my poor radio reception on that site.

Go look around the LOWES store electric dept... I have added a regular PVC Electric box and drilled out a large center hole in it. Then I can mount the MALE outside connector in it to plug the female end of a HD extension cord in... All weather tight...

The AMAZON link above looks like a neat deal too...

I too do what you do with my storage door. I can run the flat 3-wire extension cords under the storage door weather seal and can close my door without any problems... No harm to the flat extension cord at all... Then I finally installed the PVC electrical box and mounted the proper 20AMP outside male plug with lid in that. I also have a regular 120VAC 20AMP receptacle with a lid next to that is fed by my 1500WATT PSW Inverter on my off-road POPUP. Here I can run a short 15A-30A adapter to allow my 1500WATT Inverter setup to feed my 30AMP shore power connection.. Sort of like this drawing of mine shows... The middle connector/plug is the 30A Shore Power Connector and the connector plug on the bottom right is the 120VAC OUTPUT connector fed by my 1500WATT PSW Inverter. This pictorial shows the different ways I connect 120VAC to power up my OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer. This is my poor mans transfer switch...

This is my OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer floor plan that shows where things are mounted inside the trailer... In this trailer I run my 120VAC HD Extension cord thru a window flap to connec up to the camp ground 20AMP Pedestal connector to run my oil-filled electric heaters inside.
