I put some solid foam, some pieces of old carpet, then heavy cardboard to bring up the level to even with the lip on the door. So much easier to slide out totes and other bulky things.
Be careful of using cardboard long-term. An exterminator with an extensive background told me that roaches love to eat the glue used to hold cardboard together. He advised us to replace cardboard storage boxes in our (stix-n-brix) basement storage area with plastic totes. Afterwards, our bug problem all but went away.
