Battery charging in Cargo trailer

I camp out of a small cargo trailer. Currently have it set up on solar with 2 6 volt batteries. Long story short I am looking for someone with experience charging batteries off tow vehicle that is not set up with tow package. I have no inverter in trailer, this is not an rv. It would need to go from tow vehicle battery ? to trailer battery? Needs to be fused? Need some kind of charge controller so batteries do not overcharge? Thanks in advance for help.

  • What is your tow vehicle?
Typically without a factory setup the easiest way is to go buy a battery isolator and run a dedicated line from the isolator to the 7 pin plug at the back of your tow vehicle. Then run a wire from the trailers plug pin to the battery plus. Correct pin outs can be found all over the the internet. Just search for Baegman wire schematic.
  • It would be an odd tow vehicle that doesn't have a trailer connector. You may need to get the socket added but U-trailers will be happy to do it for you. Or buy a kit and do it yourself.
