Best way to remove caulking from TT's gel coat...

Question

Hello, everyone. I've decided to replace my TT's kitchen vent after losing several outside door/flappers that blew off at road speed (yes, I did have the latches thrown).

After removing the old vent,(a poor design compared to my new one)I've got some 7 year old caulk around the hole in the wall. I've peeled/scraped everything off that I could, but I'm still left with some caulk that refuses to let go of the gel coat. I didn't want to scratch/gouge up the gel coat, so I quit and came here, the font of all knowledge pertaining to RVs.

Does anyone know of a foolproof (that's me, my wife tells me; I'm the fool)way to remove old caulking before laying down a new bed of caulk around the perimeter of the new vent?

They make a commercial caulk remover I have used it in the past with decent results bought it at one of the big boxes. You might also try rubbing alcohol, just test it in a small area first. Good luck

3M caulk remover, it works great, just give it plenty of time to work and you can wipe the caulk off with a rag.

I use a straight razor blade VERY carefully to get the bulk off.  Any that remains will come off with the 3M remover real easy.

An old school trick of spraying WD-40 on there might do it as well. WD40 works great for old sticker residue. Never tried it on caulk, but it's worth a shot.

if you get to the point of not getting any  more off, just put a large amount of caulk back on and install the vent. it will seal OK and just wipe off any excess caulking with your wet finger.
