I'd wire it up to a timer so when I pressed a button or turned a timers knob, it powered the device for a limited amount of time. Otherwise you'll always have to remember to turn it off. You could use more than one timer. I'd wire them in the kitchen and bath and use the to supply the ground for the 12 volts. Like this one:
