Look into change of phase materials. I'm not suggesting they are suitable because I do not know. But I'm certain they are better than 300 lbs of drywall.
The drywall isn't for insulation. It's for a cool sink to reduce AC cycling. At night, it's extremely effective. And yes, the factory insulation on the roof is ineffective. No argument there. This is why I'm doing something about it.
