Disc brakes

I'm narrowing it down to the Kodiak 7k/13" disc brake kit. I don't see Titan 13" kits and Dexter is way high priced. What actuator are you guys using. The Titan EHB is the cheapest. Is there any reason to spend more on the actuator? TIA! Craig
  • I have Kodiak disc brakes and Towbrake actuator. I am using Tekonsha P3 control. What voltage should the control to be set at and also what boost setting are you using with your other actuators ?

    Thanks in advance
  • FYI... Titan shows 7-8k/13" disc kits on their site but they aren't available yet so it's down to Dexter and Kodiak. There are more vendors for the lighter axles. I ordered the Kodiak kits, Carlisle actuator and everything else but the lines from etrailer. I will make them myself. Trailer parts superstore had the best price on the Carlisle and etrailer matched it + 10%. Nice little bonus! Craig
  • Thanks guys! It looks like Dexter costs the most and is the most expensive to maintain. I just checked Titans site and they also have a 7.2K/13" kit with a one piston caliper. I think I know enough to do some intelligent shopping, now. Craig
  • Just installed the Kodiak Disk Kit on my Dad's HH Premier. Used the Dexter actuator. He loves it! Also went with the oil bath system. Had a leak on the first test run. The seal was cocked so the seal was changed and all is well now.

As Randu said it is important to keep the slide bolts properly lubed with the Kodiak calipers. I have Kodiak on my Mobile Suites and they work great! The Kodiak pads are the same as a Buick Century so they are readily available. I went with NAPA's best Semi Metallic pad per Kodiak's recommendation.
  • I've had both Dexter and Kodiak Disc and both use the Carlisle actuator. Dexter was factory installed on a 2004 Newmar Kountry Star and Kodiak factory installed on current 2008 Mobile Suites Trailer.

Both are very comparable in performance. Kodiak much easier to work on and pads readily available at any auto parts store. Pads way cheaper for Kodiak as Dexter runs $150 per axle where Kodiak closer to $30.00 per axle. I had problems on the Dexter' with pistons hanging up in calipers which led to uneven pad wear and replacement of caliper 1/2's. Very expensive as I had to get from Dexter direct.
Only known issue with Kodiak is that some have had a caliper hang up and not slide on sleeve and chew pads. Very easy fix to disassemble and grease sleeve.

Morryde does hundreds of brake conversions and use Carlisle actuators and Kodiak disc brakes. One could read something into that as far as cost and reliability. Randu
  • What's better about the Dexter and Carlyle actuators? Titan will put together a complete kit which would be convenient but I might piece my own system together if I can end up with better quality. I figured I'd get a price from Dexter so I called them yesterday and the best person to talk to was already gone for the weekend and I needed to get more numbers from my hubs, brgs and axles, anyway. The best person to talk to was also gone at Kodiak but I think they have a bigger rotor than Dexter for my application and it looks like the Kodiak calipers are also favored over Dexter. The pictures I've seen of the Dexter caliper looks like it's 4 piston and the caliper is fixed rather than having sliding pins. I've never had a caliper like that so I don't know what to think of them. When I talk to the right people I'll find out if my Jordan works with the E/H actuators. Craig

Make sure the actuator will work with your brake controller -some need add-on devices to work properly with OEM built in controllers.

Personally like the Dexter and Carlisle units better than the Titan. Sensabrake and the TowBrake units have some neat features but are not nearly as common as the other three units mentioned.
