Electrical help needed

Shot myself in the foot today.:o In the process of upgrading my batteries (got 2 6 volt US Battery 2200s) I thought I would shorten the cable from my solar charge controller to the battery. It was running from the charge controller to the battery--about 5 feet of cable. I decided that if I could tap into this connection in the photo, I could shorten the solar charge cable and use the existing battery wire.

The posts & nuts are corroded, and the relay or whatever it is came apart while I was trying to take the nut off. The red wire on the right goes directly to the battery.

My questions: 1. What is this gizmo? 2. Can I safely bypass it? 3. If I shouldn't bypass it, how common are they in an auto parts store? (The nearest RV dealer is a 70 mile drive).

That looks like a fuse, see if there is any ID written on it as in 300A etc.
