I know it seems that way, and my last two trailers did too. But I think it is just a matter of waiting for enough gas to flow. That pilot flow is tiny, and the line from the valve is long, and it takes a while for the gas to push out any air and build up enough to light. I have learned to hold the button in for about a good 30 seconds or more before I even try to light it. The flow is so small that this won't ever be a problem with gas buildup. I've never had any flash back at all by doing that. So I suggest you try it again with that in mind.
