Fixing 'er Up '03 Fleetwood Bounder

1st Project: Water Heater Upgrade
Old water heater: GC10A-3E to GE16EXT. They are both 10 Gallons, ignition controlled, and powered by LP Gas & Electric.

I repaired damaged metal around the water heater's compartment.
The previous owner had a blow out and did a lot of damage. The RV is missing a storage compartment, the wheel well fender is loose, the water heater compartment was damaged which crimped the gas line allowing no gas to pass; and the black water tank damaged. I fixed the black water tank with some silicone and new pipe that allows you to flush the tank. I haven't got to the storage compartment yet.

Here are some pics of my water heater replacement:

  • I'm confused on the rat nest...???

Haha, the water heater door hides that messy job. ;)
There is a crack in the fender which I used caulking to seal it. I should have used clear but on hand all I had was white. I haven't done it yet but I plan to cut and peel the excess caulking off. Once I do that I will take pics and post them. :)

Take Note: the new 10 gallon water heater acts like a 16 gallon and has a shorter time frame of heating the water. This model has an additional wire to control the electric side of the heater. I had to route a new wire which activates a relay to control the electric side of the heater unlike the old model which used a regular 120 VAC switch.
  • Nice work but we need to send you to caulk school for a couple of days, lol.
  • I hope you removed that rat nest and looked for any other sign.
  • Current Modifications & Upgrades:

Replaced bedroom tv with a flat screen; upgraded house batteries with yellow top optima batteries 150 Amp-hours (Ah); upgrade main battery with red top optima battery 55 Ah.

    Future Modifications:
    • Install a solar panel system to roof of RV
    • Replace front tv with flat screen
    • convert one of the roof vents into an evap cooler/swamp cooler
    • replace all tires (high priority: any suggestions?)
    • thinking about upgrading the 30amp service plug to 50amp service plug and installing a 50amp load center splitting the outlets evenly across the 240 VAC source (might need to replace the air conditioner controller board though)

The solar panel system I plan to use provides about 500 watts. For the pure/true sine wave inverter I have two options: single phase 120 VAC 30amps or split phase 240 VAC 30amps (this depends on if I converted to the 50amp service). I will use a 60amp charge controller. I will use a 300 Ah battery bank. The missing compartment will become the battery bank compartment. I will relocate the house batteries to the battery bank compartment. I'm thinking on converting over to a 24 VDC system but I might stay with the 12 VDC system. I will probably convert the house battery compartment to a tool compartment.

There will be more upgrades & modifications later.

Edit: I forgot: RV needs tune-up: oil change, spark plugs & wires, air filter, transmission filter & fluid change; need to replace the missing resonator on exhaust pipes; and that I fixed the leaking fuel line.
  • Thank you.

It took me all weekend. It was time consuming but fun to do.
    The job was self rewarding.
