Ok got a 1500 watt Inverter , it came with 2 gauge wire and a ANL inline fuse.Appears very good quality..Ok read all the instructions , seems simple enough.I feed the cables through the floor , route them over to where I have 2 batteries hooked up in parallel.I check voltage to the inverter 13.1 .Thinking that's ok , I turn the inverter on the display reads 13.0-12.9 voltage coming in.(nothing hooked up to it)Then about 5 seconds POP and a little smoke comes out from the cooling fan and the front air gaps where if the fan was on the air would blow through.Then the alarm goes off reading high voltage ????I recheck everything installed just like what the directions read .So I take one of the two batteries out of the equation and only have it hooked up to one battery check the voltage 12.9-13.0 Turn on the inverter again , no pop just alarm sound and display reading high voltage.Do NOT have the engine running or have the shore power line plugged in either. Any ideas ?

Faulty inverter. There may have been something conductive that was loose inside the inverter and caused a short when powered.

If the 12v polarity is correct it must be a bad inverter.Time for a warranty exchange.

Thanks I was thinking along the same lines !My fault , waiting till a week before we leave to order a converter.What I liked about this one , it came with everything to hook it up.I looked at the 1500 watt Camping World had on sale online, but they were out and said to look to store for being in stock. The local CW only had a 1000 watt and then the 3000 watt in stock. I read all the reviews and only one bad review with DOA right out of the box.I'll call the place tomorrow and see what they want/can do for me.I ordered it off amazon Friday with a 2 day prime shipping and still took another day to get it ...We're headed out Thursday for 3 weeks Next closest one I found was $180 then another ?? for 2 gauge cable , connectors and inline fuse link etc.

$180 is a low price for a quality inverter of 1500 watts. What make and model is it?

I hooked it straight up to the batteries no converter in the equation at all.
Also did not have the shore line plugged in either.
Yes the + and - was hooked up properly , I tested + cable at the back of the inverter before I even turned it on. Had 13.1 at the connection.
So I turned it on and within 3-5 seconds a POP inside the inverter and burnt wire smelling smoke came out both ends.

I talked with a CS person and told what happened , I sent it back.

Get a PURE SINE inverter since you should get a new one anyway.

Most inverters of all types have a high voltage and low voltage cut off alarm/ feature. Over voltage should not have caused any damage that fast as it should have turned itself off.

If the converter was back feeding it, i believe at worst you would just drain your batteries very rapidly.

Is it possible that there was already 120v available and it was fed into the inverter? ((some people hard wire the inverters to apply power to the entire camper, if you plug the camper it, a back feed condition can happen and blow the inverter))

I have a -cheaper- PS Morningstar PS 2k inverter, with the amazon 3 year warranty, and its running flawlessly even under constant (1 week) 24/7 use.

The fans are loud, but its in a compartment under the camper so we dont hear them at all.
