I've had several unauthorized "uses" of my bathroom the last year by people staying in the camper. Usually kids in there playing with my kids. The door has a knob on it but I want to switch it out to one with a key so I can lock the door. Anyone ever done this and do I need to order a special knob for the door or do they carry something that will work at the hardware stores? I haven't measured the thickness of the door but I'm going to do that today. I would think I could find something at Lowes that would work but a buddy of mine said he thought I'd have to order one specifically for a camper door.

I may be wrong. But I'm pretty sure that is the same as a house door handle. and no I have not had to lock the door. good luck:W

just make sure it has a mobile home label and it will be a direct replacemant

Mine already locks from the inside by pushing in the knob and turning it about a quarter turn. A small straight slot screwdriver unlocks it from the outside. Perhaps yours is the same.

The reg house lock sets are for thicker doors. Like said above. Go to a mobile home parts dealer. I work P/T @ Home Depot and am constantly pulling out my tape and showing people this. They always say "looks like the same thing" Wrong!!

I replaced my worn out bathroom door latch with a standard set from a local hardware store. The only modification I had to make was to shorten the shaft a bit.

I replaced my RV bedroom door yesterday with one from Home Depot. Its not lockable but it works on a door with a min thickness of 1.25 inches.

I replaced both the bedroom and bathroom door knobs with standard Kwikset locksets from Home Depot. They worked just fine without any modification.

Just wanted to do a quick update to the thread. Got my new door handle with lock installed last night. Used a regular household lock. The only fabrication I had to do was countersink the plate on the end of the door so it didn't hit the striker. Took me about 15 minutes start to finish to install it. Thanks for all the advice and opinions. No more unauthorized dukes will be taken in my camper. :D

Just got back from a weekend trip and my 9 year old locked our bathroom door on accident, I didn't know it even had a lock on it.

Remove two bolts and take the toilet with you when you leave. That should work.

Of course, I'm saying that "tongue in cheek" but it would actually work pretty well. Take a small piece of of wood and bolt it in place using same bolts.

Just don't forget to take it back with you when you go! :-)

That will work fine too. Personally I like the "privacy" lockset better because they're generally cheaper and easy to open from the outside if someone accidentally locks the door from the inside.

In your case, the "entry" lockset is not a bad idea to prevent unauthorized use which is really your goal after all.

I've had multiple talks with all the kids & parents about it. I'm not completely sure a sign would work. A locked door however is 100% effective. It's not just kids either. Had some adults stay in it while visiting over the winter & it was used then but not flushed which left me a nice moldy surprise this spring when I went to de-winterize the camper. A lock on the door solves a lot of issues. The next step is no one is allowed in my camper. I really don't want to do that & be like that but I'm getting fairly tired of cleaning up after people & have them treat my camper like it's their rental. Last hunting season someone left 2 cans of 7 up in the storage under the fridge which froze & burst. Found those this spring when I opened that storage & saw mold in the carpet. I looked under there when I winterized it but they had rolled to the back & i didn't see them. Wasn't expecting soda to be in there in the first place because we don't use that storage. Just a lot of little things that bother me. This bathroom situation is easily solved with a lock. Other behaviors have already been addressed with my buddies. I told them I don't want to be the bad guy here but I also don't want my camper trashed. I spent a lot of money on it (for us) & I want to keep it nice.
