Mounting 90 deg. or 45 deg. entry door holders

Question

For those of you using a 90 deg. or 45 deg. entry door holder, how are you doing it?   I ask because those holders will typically land somewhere on the door where there is no solid wood on the interior....typically several inches in from the edge where the door is a thin skin over a foam core.

BOTH pieces must be located and oriented where there is good support; not always easy, but pretty much required. If the location of one results in a bad location for the other, then the first needs to be relocated or modified.

If relocation is not possible, then how about a larger aluminum plate (1/8" thick, painted) attached (using screws or pop rivets) to either the wall or the door to give additional support where is needed?
