On board sub meter

Been in the process of attempting to install an 'on board sub meter'. What's that you say? Well, we tend to move around a bit as full timers and I'd like to be able to monitor my power consumption wherever I land. Some locations have meters... but others don't. Rather than setting up a meter everywhere I go, I'd like to have one onboard that goes with me.
Here's my set up. Power comes off both sides of my main power source panel at the house to a 50 amp RV outlet. My power cord is 30amp so I adapt it down to my 30amp 3 wire cord. At my RV power is adapted back up to 4 wire 50amp cord that runs into the meter that is mounted in my 'utility' cargo bay. Red and black hot wires run to the terminals for receiving the meter while green and white pass through the meter box uninterrupted.
I've wired power to my breaker box with red and black hot wires to each side, white neutral to its bar and green ground to its bar. However, the meter doesn't spin to indicate power usage.
Don't believe my wiring is faulty. Power flows through the meter as everything in the RV functions properly. Guy who sold me the meter is reputable Ebay vendor. This is the second meter I've tried. The first one was all digital and we thought something may have gone wrong with the meter so he send me a mechanical replacement... same story. Power flows, RV lights up but no meter reading.
So, any thoughts out there? Thanks much for your help.

The meter is not wired correctly. You cannot convert 50a 120/240 service to 120v service and back to 240/120.

You need to stick with 120v service that your RV has in place. The meter is wired with a jumper instead of two hot lines when used at 120v.

    Video here (120v):

Here is the 240v video (to compare only-will not work on your 120v RV)

  • Why are you using a 30A power cord with 50A power supply and 50A RV?

Anyway.........you need to 'convert' that meter for 120V 2 wire
(course you would only be able to use 30A supply)

Otherwise..get rid of that 30A cord and use 50A cord with 2 independent hot leads and wire sub-meter as a 240V 3 wire
    Course anytime you use a 30A adapter....it won't work
  • You only have one phase of 120 V, doubled. With a single phase and a single neutral, your 240 V meter may not work. Can you post a link to the meter you installed?

Does the meter require 220v across the two wires/legs to work properly? By going from 50 to 30 to 50 you only have 110v.

Just a thought. I'm no electrician!

Thanks for the thought. I have been pondering that today. Obviously, I'm no electrician either. Really don't want to run out and purchase 100' of 50amp cable for the rig. Thought I'd see what the forum had to say about the situation.
    Thanks again
  • Thanks, that's a nice unit. My current set up is a traditional glass meter by Elster. Did not see the one you posted previous to embarking on this project. Perhaps I'd have gone that direction. Hoping to get this system operational for now. I will keep efergy in mind as an alternative if this goes nowhere.
    Thanks again.
