plexiglass screen door protector

I made this to protect my screen door when I have to leave my dog in the trailer by herself. She's normally not a door scratcher but the screen for the door seems like she could easily damage it if she got scared. I made it so its removable. The fasteners you see are actually shimmed fender washers that act like hooks.

  • For anyone else considering this...

My dog is only medium/small sized, mini Australian Shepard, so I only had to cover the lower inside section of the screen door. I found with the proper thickness of plexiglass, I was able to actually slide in into the screen door frame and didn't have to use anthing else to attach it. It has been in place that way for about 4 years and has never come out. I did have to end up buying a cloud design window film to put on the plexiglass to block my dog's vision of the outside as anytime someone would walk their dog by, my dog would bark... yes, she thinks the world is hers. :)

With her not being able to see other dogs walking by, she rarely barks.

Same mod here for the same reason but I did both sides of the screen door. Since plexiglass scratches easily I instead used Optix purchased at our local Home Depot. I had intended to eventually do the top half of the door as well so we could leave the main door open when using A/C but that's so seldom I just haven't yet bothered.

Both sides? Yeah, for sure ... our dog will paw at the door to get out if we're outside, will paw at the door if we're inside so I did have to cover both sides of the door. With my earlier reference to using A/C I should probably do the top of the door as well, though I would only have to do one side, but for the few times we use A/C I've just stuck a piece of Reflectix over the screening to prevent the cooled air from leaking through it ... not pretty but it works fine.
