If I was a firefighter, you wouldn't catch me running up to a flaming trailer and fiddling with a propane time-bomb waiting vent its contents into the fire..
Tanks will vent when they get hot, then they become a flaming geyser!bgum wrote:
They are being stolen to make a batch of drugs.
Ditto.
I've never had any tanks stolen. People do have them stolen in storage yards that friends use.- beemerphile1ExplorerDid that years ago and in fact have done the mod to my last two trailers.
- bgumExplorerMotorhomes have tanks that are not removable.
- LantleyNomadI don't doubt lp theft happens. However I'm more afraid of fire than I am a thief.
If you have a real need, because you have already lost a tank to a thief I do understand. But for most it's a fire hazard.
There is a reason you are not allowed to block/lock a fire door! - BarneySExplorer IIIYears ago, I had a popup trailer stored in my son-in-laws barn. The barn burned to the ground taking our popup with it including the partially full propane tank on the tongue. The tank was blackened and a bit warped but did not explode.
Not sure why as we were in Florida for the winter when it happened and was not able to talk to the firemen about it. Just glad it didn't explode.:E. Posted a picture on RV.net shortly after it happened but the picture was lost during the Photobucket fiasco several years ago.

It may even be illegal so fire fighters can remove them quickly...think if the back of the trailer is on fire, you don't want to be trying to remember where the key is...and yes, I've seen this exact scenario play out (minus the lock).
Also, there was a seasonal campground we stayed at and they caught the staff who stayed in their camper over the winter swapping out tanks from the rigs that were left there over the winter...so yes, it happens. - wanderingaimlesExplorerThese work too.

Ah well, you folks made theft legal in Cali after all. - capacitorExplorerMy buddy had both 30lb tanks stolen from his trailer parked in his driveway. He bought new ones and did the same thing the OP did. I followed suit and did it also.
