Question about interior walls

I have an idea for a small TV/DVD cabinet in my garage but I'm not sure how to attach it to the walls? It would be a corner cabinet and would mount on one interior and one exterior wall. Can I assume that the interior walls are empty voids and that the exterior walls probably have styrofoam insulation? I think my rig ('15 Fuzion 325) has steel studs, but the walls feel pretty flimsy. It doesn't need to hold much weight (15 inch TV and small DVD player), but coming off the wall and falling into my bike is not an option! Any guidance?

Well... some say you can use a stud finder but I find that "hit and miss". The way I do it is to use a drywall type screw, if it will not go in, I've found the metal stud. Just do it where the cabinet will cover the holes.

As for toggles, they require a big hole and if there's Styrofoam in the wall, they may not "flip" open at all. Also you can't take the cabinet back down without them falling down in the wall.

My advice is to use the ones I posted a picture of for the above reasons and limit the amount of them. Remember,,, every time you put in a screw or wall anchor, you risk hitting a wire. Use just enough to hold it up and no more.

  • Probably aluminum frame and interior wood stud wall will have little framing. If installing a cabinet that is wall hung, make sure it has a ledger across the top that spans 16" so that you can get a few screws into the frame.
The good news is that new LCD screens weigh very little and can be mounted on conventional articulating mount when bracket is secured into frame or into ledger attached to frame.
IIRC, my 32" screen weighs 10 lbs.
