Profdant, you're right - not important if batteries are not disconnected often (and they shouldn't, IMO).

Not much can fall part there, other than the modified part - pop rivet.

I use only stainless hardware on batteries, so drilling and cutting would be difficult. Something to consider for those close to sea.
