Refer cooling.... rear baffles and fans....any advice?

My refer struggles to stay cold when ambient temps reach 90F +. I researched and learned that baffles and fans help considerably.

Norcold (my refer is Model #N843). Norcold installation manual states there should be max 1" from rear of refer to side wall of RV. My refer did not come with fans.

My factory install has about 5"-6" between rear of refer and side wall. (see attached pic...this is taken looking up to roof event from base of refer)

Since RV manufacturer did not install baffles and refer did not come with fans, I figured I would install fans to move some air through the rear of my refer and fab up some baffles to get air passing more efficiently through the upper fins (condenser).

I would like to do these mods WITHOUT removing the refer.

Now, have any of you done these mods and can share tips, advice and pics. Pics are VERY helpful!

1. Fan selection, size, and placement (at top vent above condenser, below condenser, at base, etc).

2. Baffle material, placement and mounting.

3. ?????

Thanks!

  • Well........

As you have found out, RV MFGs do NOT know how to properly install absorption fridges. OR they choose to ignore the Fridge MFGs installation requirements

Check out pgs 22 thru 26--------HERE

12V DC Computer fans with bearings are quiet and last longer
They can be wired to go ON/OFF vai thermostat attached to far right fin of condenser (top finned component).
    OR a manual On/Off switch
Use an in-line fuse on POS wire.....DC available right at control module

Best location for fans is center line mid position of fridge (top of absorber tubing/coils
That way they PULL air up thru absorber tubes and PUSH air out across condenser fins

Baffles.......sheet metal See examples in manual linked.

Get the proper clearances, correct the draft flow and you will see improved cooling
  • My refer system has a roof vent and access panel on passenger side of RV. It is an 8cf model.
  • Try a fridge cool fan inside the fridge. We used one and stuff actually started to freeze, so it may be OK for use in the conditions you describe. It is supposed to maintain more consistent temperature inside refrigerator compartment.

  • One thing that works great in the really hot temps is freeze bottles of water and move them back forth from the fridge to the freezer. I know that's a band aid but it works great.
  • is your vent on the side of the rv? if so I put two computer fans on mine get the ones with a high cfm out put .that drops my temp a lot . BUT these rv frigs will have a tuff time in your area.
