Replacing awning torsion mechinism

I had just finished replacing my awning fabric (Dometic 8500)and found that the end cap on the ratchet side was cracked. I ordered a new torsion assembly since the cap alone wasn't available. My question is "do I need to go through the whole process again?" or can I just release the tension on the damaged side, slide in the assembly and reassemble? Do I need to release the tension on both sides?

  • Thanks guys! The replacement went smooth as silk. Got it just in time since the cap was cracked through. It probably would have broken on the road this weekend.
  • you can do just the one side
but some body is going to HAVE TO hold the awning out
as you will doing the only side that locks
and the other side will be fully loaded and ready to roll up

just put it in and wind it the same number of turns as when you installed the fabric
  • Bought it from Dyers RV. www.dyersonline.com Good prices and fast shipping. I used the YouTube video https://youtu.be/xpjXXTEjCkg Good information. I just let go of the vice grip too soon. All in all the replacement was fairly simple. I just don't want to screw it up after all of that hard work.

Just release the side you are doing.
You need to have the same number of turns on the new as on the old. If not the awning may roll up crooked.
BTW could you email me the place you bought your supplies, Awning fabric and Cap assembly.
My job next month is to do the fabric
