If you have to resize the opening in the ceiling, if you have wood trusses, it's real easy. I installed a semi-recessed ceiling heater in a previous TT and just framed in a complete new opening (using 2x2 IIRC) and screwed into the wood trusses.
If aluminum trusses, it will be a bit more difficult and you'd want to drill small pilot holes to get a screw started or use a self-tapper sheet metal screw. With alum, trusses, for larger things like AC units, through-the-roof fans, etc., they just use a piece of 2x lumber at the factory but it gets screwed down into from the roof side. If you are faced with aluminum trusses, I *think* attaching a couple of small framing pieces with angle brackets would be fine. You'd be amazed at what they do at the factory to alum. trusses.
Cutting luan plywood on a ceiling is very easy. Just use a sharp utility knife and go slowly and make multiple passes. Mark cuts for a new opening with painters tape first.
