Hmmm, we had our old trailer 16 years, it didn't have a filter and I don't filter it when we fill the tank. (We only dry camp). Never worried about it, never had a problem.
This new trailer has an under counter filter, I change it at the start of the season, that's it, never worried about it. It's not like we drink the water, we use it for coffee, tea etc, and for cooking, we pack bottled water for drinking.
I am like you except that I don't buy bottled water and I drink the water supplied to the RV after passing through at least 2 filters which are never drained between outings, nor changed until they clog up. Wife and I have had no ill effects from this practice. We do flush the water for a minute after each hookup but I suspect that won't clear out all that may be hanging around in the filters.
We only camp in State Parks or other campgrounds and have never consumed water from the FW tank. So far our FW is only used for flushing the toilet. l will have to sanitize the FW tank one of these days as we may need to drink from it.
