I use a dual filter setup like this:

There is a sediment filer in the first and a carbon filter in the second. The ones that I use are clear which I really like so I can see the condition of the sediment filter. I then have a separate filter to a line that provides water to my ice maker and to a separate water dispenser. This is a very high quality water "polisher" and gives drinking water close to bottled water. The rest of the water is for washing, showering, flushing, etc. so the basic filters work just fine.
I also use a separate water softener for all incoming water but that's more a personal choice than a necessity.
