Water pump upgrade

I used a 2 gal exp tank and made a tee with a 3/8" copper tubing stub for the inlet water that goes almost up to the bladder (on the run of the tee) and the outlet water comes from the branch. That way the pulses get deadened by the bladder and the outlet water is out of the immediate vicinity of the inlet flow. Mine used to hammer terribly and now I can barely hear it. Craig

I added a 2 gal expansion tank and also flexible braided stainless lines to the output side. Made the pump very quiet without any changes to the mounting of it, 99% of the noise was the vibration in the hard PEX lines. The pump fittings are 1/2" NPT, common home center size.

The expansion tank is nice because the pump doesn't run every time you open a faucet, nor does it cycle repeatedly. When it comes on it's rebuilding pressure in the expansion tank and will run for a minute or more.

Note that I added a valve to bypass the expansion tank when winterizing.

I isolated my pump and hoses with foam and rubber, and added an accumulator. It's very quiet now. I think I use less water with the older, slower pump than I would with one of those newer, variable speed ones. Very important in my book.

That's what they sent me, and the surging of the water and lights drove me nuts. It seems that the pressure bypass has a 'range' where it works. But below that flow it acts as a demand pump.

The replacement for the 5.7 is the 4048. I have one that has worked great for several years. They vary the output by bypassing the water that is not used instead of changing the speed of the pump. Seems like it should be a more reliable system since it's either on or off like a "standard" pump.

For previous posts on noisy pumps you could search this Forum for `pump' then `noisy' or other phrase. It's been discussed quite a bit. Our Shurflo 4.0 is so quiet one can't hear it with the A/C on but that's with many mods to help make it quiet; all discussed in this Forum.
