I installed a solenoid valve last year. It's a 120 volt version and it's controlled by an on/off switch at the exterior door. With a flip of the switch, the water is off and there's no chance of a leak while not there. It easily fit beside the water heater. Just need to remember to flip the switch on the way out... ;)
Have thought about a slow leak detector of some kind to close the solenoid. We have never used our FW tank, not even once and always hook up to city water.
I've read of a few too many leaks ending up in total disaster. We had a toilet valve fail a couple of seasons ago and the bowl started to fill up but we were fortunate to be there and caught it in time.
Nice! My only thought would be "I hope you used a GFI". ;)
