Why not paint tires for UV protection??

Actually, I can't find a reasonable reason TO do it, but to each his own.

We bought some coating, years ago, atCW Sun something or other. A mess to put on.
I guess it worked pretty well how many of the washings it survived I don't know, but every time you touched the tire you got black, for a long time.
Paint or most/all coatings will flex and crack unlike the rubber.
The tires came off the rear this year after 13 years and as sound as the day they were installed. I kick myself for changing them.
They were GY670s which have a horrible wear problem on most front axles but the rubber has a lot of uv in it as motor home tires do.
The Michelins are supposed to be good for two recappings so maybe they will last too under a lot less load and stored inside and rubber washed and caared for. No petroleum coatings or cleaners

It sure would be interesting to do a controlled experiment with a dual axle trailer -- paint one tire on each side, and monitor the results.

NO, UV IS NOT A "BIG CONCERN" unless you are a over the top fanatical folks that listen to all the non sense and hog wash of snake oil sales people in order to attempt to keep things well past their expired life.

Even IF it was possible to preserve the tires, you will find yourself having to constantly reapplying and you would have to encase the tire from the inside and out and including the tread.

Over the years I have seen cracking on tires on the surface around the bead not only on the outside exposed to the sun face but also the side towards the vehicle..

Tires HAVE a limited life, the compounds used will break down over time and use and slathering paint or any other material on the surface will not extend the life.. In fact by painting them you WILL cause the tires to deteriorate FROM HEAT BUILDUP when on the road..

Paint is a HEAT INSULATOR which means the tire will not be able to radiate the heat build up in the carcass..

Tires flex A LOT, I am highly doubtful that any paint (including latex based) will be able to survive the shear flexing without cracking.

You ARE wasting your time and money..

I guess I'm lucky, never cover the tires.. no cracking.. they are nearing 5 years old so I'll replace beginning of next season just in case.. it's cheap on a single axle rig..

No, but it will expose the tire to UV. Since the majority of a tire's time is spent stationary, I don't get any of this.

Not joking. My understanding is that UV is a big concern. Not the only concern, but one of the main concerns. Cracking of the sidewall usually happens on the side facing outward for this reason. Anyway, I am going to try it. I don't see a convincing argument not to. I seriously doubt the paint peeling would be enough weight to cause a balance issue.
