Today, my wife and I were travelling and we stopped in a 2nd hand consignment store just to look around. I found the exact 02 Cool fan we've been discussing (with the hook) still in box, A/C adapter never used, still wrapped in plastic, but the fan had 8 DC batteries already installed. I assumed they were dead, but no, the fan worked great with them.
I bought it. Total cost: $6. Sometimes you just get lucky.
