LOL, yes, they count. It goes by the total width of the widest point of the trailer. Not the box. Like I said, I'm sure no one will ever check. I left my removable ladder on my last one all the time which put me over. But, by the letter of the law, anything over 102" is a wide load. Even if it's a screw head.
