I see my fair share of the smaller "1/2 ton towable" 5th wheels come into the State Park we host at, being pulled by 1/2 tons. Those folks don't seem to have a problem. Then again they probably do not visit RV boards where the fear mongering runs rampant.
Sorry I edited my post after you quoted me. There is a large bump on this stretch of road. The posted speed limit is 75mph, so I wouldn't be surprised if this guy was going too fast and hit the bump and due to the light truck, it got out of control.
I think 1/2 tons are fine at towing things in some parts of the country. I wouldn't even think about it out here in CO though... high winds, the roads aren't great but have high speeds, etc.
